Julia Mermelstein is a composer, pianist, and guitarist originally from Halifax Nova Scotia. She received a BFA in Composition and Piano Performance from Concordia University, Montréal in 2013. Julia has a passion for teaching both classical and contemporary music. Because of her specialty in composition, she likes to involve improvisation and composition into her lessons to evoke creativity and self expression with the instrument.

Julia composes contemporary music with a focus on chamber music and writing for dance productions. She has also scored for several short animation films that have been screened at festivals around the world. Her compositions have been performed by The Array Ensemble, Ensemble Arkea, Toy Piano Composers Ensemble, Quatuor Bozzini, Nostos Dance Collectives, Windermere String Quartet, DaCapo Chamber Choir, Orchestre Symphonique de l’Isle and presented at Arraymusic YCW, Montréal Contemporary Music Lab, and New Voices Festival.
